Darkness and Light

I’m thrilled to be going to Adelaide next week to attend the Adelaide Fringe Festival and to be attending this show, Darkness and Light.

Depression and anxiety are often taboo subjects in our society but this Comedy Show is bringing light to the topic through a range of hilarious and talented comedians sharing their stories.

If in Adelaide over the next week, this is a must see!

Darkness and Light at the Adelaide Fringe

Adelaide, South Australia: Making its debut at the Adelaide Fringe Festival this year, Darkness and Light is a show for those who like their comedy a little on the real side.

Darkness and Light will run at The Tuxedo Cat from March 10  To March 17th (excluding Wednesday 13th ) at 11pm each night.

Darkness and Light brings together a fusion of funny people using a combination of stand-up, and stunning storytelling, to uncover the comedy gold that lurks beneath some of their darkest days. This is not about making light of a serious issue, it’s to demonstrate how darkness and light can co-exist in our lives and we can persevere.

Anyone who’s ever experienced bullying, mental illness, racism, coming out, grief, chronic illness, substance misuse, a broken heart, or just a really bad day will find they’re not the only ones, as some of the Fringe Festival’s top comics (and some very special international guests) share their very personal postcards from the edge.

Often confronting, but always funny, the Darkness and Light line-up changes every night, and features a stellar selection of comics at the top of their game, including:

DeAnne Smith, Cath Styles, Richard McKenzie, Jon Bennett, Michael Bowley, Toby Halligan, Lori Bell, Alexis Dubus, Simon Taylor, Morven Smith, Ben McKenzie, Mark Trenwith, Nikki Britton, Nath Valvo, Abigoliah Schamaun, Juliet Meyers, Bryan Lynagh, Tim Whitt, and many more.

*Check Fringe website for nightly line-up.

We invite you to step into the dark side, and see the light!

“Darkness and Light was an important and deeply satisfying evening. I came away feeling uplifted. I strongly suggest people go and support this show. It needs to be performed again and again: opening people’s minds, opening people’s hearts.” Glass Wings

Matt Pratten prepares for the Peru Challenge and trek to Machu Pichu

My dear family friend Matt Pratten decided to join me on the Machu Pichu trip, Peru Challenge 2012, in a spontaneous burst of enthusiasm. I was chatting to Matt on Facebook and said “Come to Peru with me” Attaching the link and adding a smiley face. He responded, “Yeah, it’s been a while since I did a good pack march!” He’s in the army you see and was keen to do something a bit different for training. The next week, he was booked and preparing to come.

I have been overwhelmingly impressed with Matt’s dedication to this trip, this cause and his fundraising efforts. We are raising awareness and much needed funds for Black dog Institute and their work with mood disorders. Depression is something that has affected Matt personally and he wants to make a change.

He’s run up mountains, dressed in a dog suit and done a hike, shaved his legs and so much more to get his totals up. He is close to $7000 now and still rising with an initial goal of $4000.

See Matt’s challenge page here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/317008385048293/?fref=ts

You can sponsor Matt here: http://peruchallenge2012.gofundraise.com.au/page/PrattenM

Good luck Matt and can’t wait to join you on this epic adventure.

R U OK? Day

R U OK? day is today, Thursday 13th September,  everyone. It’s a simple question with a very powerful message. Let’s work together as a recommunity today and be there for those in need. :)

Its goal was to help reduce our national suicide rate by getting Australians to reach out and make contact with others.

Hear why Hugh Jackman says it’s ok to say, ‘I’m not ok’ http://www.ruokday.com/supporters/ambassadors/hugh-jackman/

Ask the simple question to someone near and dear to you – R U OK?

I recently shared a wonderful video featuring my friend and colleague James Freemantle of  REDgum Communications with his message about R U OK? DayJames Freemantle encourages rural communities to stay connected and be conscious of how the isolation of farming can impact on wellbeing. He also offers hope to anyone living with depression.

Invincible Summer

Invincible Summer is a film raising awareness about depression and anxiety in an artistic and real way.

James Freemantle, star and producer says “There was a long battle. I lost a cousin and friends to depression, and was desperate to be well. So with Simon, Pete, Lawrence ‘Goblin’ Mooney and other generous mates made ‘Invincible Summer’. We won a trophy. Things got better. And it helped people.”

James Freemantle speaks openly about depression and anxiety. Through a number of other videos and interviews, he has encouraged rural communities to stay connected and be conscious of how the isolation of farming can impact on wellbeing. He also offers hope to anyone living with depression.

Emma conquers Machu Pichu for mood disorder awareness

Hey everyone,

Last year I went on the adventure of a lifetime and I climbed Mt Kilimajaro in Africa for Alzheimer’s on behalf of my late Grandpa Jack. The night before I went on that incredible journey, I started thinking…”What next?” 1 challenge was just not enough. I was addicted before I began! And here I am, heading off on the next big adventure – PERU CHALLENGE 2012.

Peru Challenge 2012 will be trekking aloing the ancient Incan trails to the incredible Machu Pichu. On 20th October, 2012, I’ll be embarking on the Peru Challenge through Inspired Adventures and am raising funds for Blackdog Institute.

Each year, Blackdog aim to advance the understanding, diagnosis and management of depression and Bipolar Disorder and improve the lives of those affected by these mood disorders. Please help me in my cause by donating through my page.

I’ve chosen to do this with Black Dog Institute in honour of my late Grandma, Doris Lovell. My dear Grandma lived with depression for the majority of her life. She wrote diaries from the age of 13 and I have since been reading them and the insight into what it’s like to live with a mood disorder such as depression is heart wrenching. Every day is often a struggle. We are fortunate now to live in a time where great organisations like Black Dog Institute are there to support us and inform us of ways to get help. Grandma was lucky to have received support from family and medicine at the time but the understanding was just not there, and still isn’t. It’s so important to raise awareness about these unfortunate and debilitating disorders and give support to those who need it most.

I feel so passionately about this cause and can’t wait to help Black Dog Institute with their great work. I’ve been personally affected by mood disorders as well as had very dear friends and family suffer. Unfortunately, I’ve also lost family and close friends due to mood disorders. It’s an important issue – but we can make a difference and help those in need.

You can also join the trip!! Visit our information page to learn more:

Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Your support is greatly appreciated.

Kindest regards

Emma Lovelly
