I learnt so much from Matt about Charity and Fundraising as he has helped many charities raise millions for such worthy causes. Learn why Matt and his lovely wife Rachel started this great business and what drives them to keep raising the bar for Charity.

When booking a ticket to Melbourne
2 months ago I considered the amount of work I would have at the time, assignments I had to do and various social commitments that may get in the way of my trip. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would also be dealing with the complication of a broken back.

This was one of my first blogs almost 3 years ago when I broke my back. It's funny, it's one of my most searched blogs for the term "Plastic back brace" and "travel with a broken back". Broken backs are extremely common and you know what ... they're not life ending! I'm still snowboarding, mountain climbing and fitter than I think I ever was. I'm just more aware of my body and fragility. What's your so called "weakness"?

  1. Give us your elevator pitch. What does your business do? Strawberry Communications generates amazing publicity!
  1. Why did you start your business? I wanted to find something I could do from home with a newborn that used my existing writing and PR skills so I started freelancing and soon it grew into a business.
  1. What’s your passion? Writing, travel and sampling amazing food. When I can combine the three I’m in heaven!
  1. What do you love most about running your business? Being my own boss means I can work from my favourite café if I want to, setting my own hours around my family commitments and being picky about who I’d like to work with.

  1. What are three difficulties you face in running your business?
  1. Cash flow
  2. Time management
  3. Switching off
  1. What are three pieces of advice you would give to someone starting their own business?
    1. Don’t wait until the website/business cards/pitch is perfect, just start and make changes as you go, because if you wait for perfection you will never do anything.
    2. Factor in time for you every day, even if it’s just enough time for a drink in peace, because you don’t want to lose who you are amongst the busy-ness of running a business and a life.
    3. Have fun doing what you do because it will consume you!
  1. Tell us, with an anecdote, why your business has changed your life? I didn’t always see myself as a business owner, or even a mother, but I became both when I turned 31 and now can’t see myself any other way. After freelancing for several months I organised day care for my eight-month-old son to attend a business mums networking event and while there speaking with other mums in business it dawned on me that I was actually running a business. I stopped at the Department of Fair Trading on the way home and registered my business name (the form had been filled in and sitting in my handbag for months).

  1. How do you manage a work/life balance? Sometimes not well, but I make my business work around my family which means I walk my son to and from school every day and work during school hours and then again after my sons have gone to bed if I need to. I make sure I have time at the weekend, particularly Sundays, to spend quality time together.
  1. What movie most inspires you in running your business? Up in the Air was a good reminder for me about what is important in my life.
  1. The best book to read before starting a business or when running a business? The upcoming Business & Baby on Board business mum bible, of course!

The boardsports loving fashion designer from Melbourne Ting Hong talks about her fresh label OOTZ.

OOTZ was created by Tony, Julian and I back in Melbourne. We were just brainstorming one day and I had this word in my head. I heard it in New Zealand when Juls & I were buying gear from this guy in Queenstown. When he said "OOTZ" we looked at each other and thought did this guy just make up this word?

Please Sponsor Me as Climb Machu Pichu for Depression and Anxiety‏

Hey everyone,

It’s my birthday in just a few weeks and I’m not asking for any presents this year, just support of my PERU CHALLENGE 2012.

Peru Challenge 2012 will be trekking along the ancient Incan trails to the incredible Machu Pichu. On 20th October, 2012, I’ll be embarking on the Peru Challenge through Inspired Adventures and am raising funds for Blackdog Institute and the awareness of Mood Disorders.
http://peruchallenge2012.gofundraise.com.au/page/Lovelly

Each year, Blackdog aim to advance the understanding, diagnosis and management of depression and Bipolar Disorder and improve the lives of those affected by these mood disorders. Please help me in my cause by donating through my page.

I’ve chosen to do this with Black Dog Institute in honour of my late Grandma, Doris Lovell. My dear Grandma lived with depression for the majority of her life.

She wrote diaries from the age of 13 and I have since been reading them and the insight into what it’s like to live with a mood disorder such as depression is heart wrenching. Every day is often a struggle. We are fortunate now to live in a time where great organisations like Black Dog Institute are there to support us and inform us of ways to get help. Grandma was lucky to have received support from family and medicine at the time but the understanding was just not there, and still isn’t. It’s so important to raise awareness about these unfortunate and debilitating disorders and give support to those who need it most.

I feel so passionately about this cause and can’t wait to help Black Dog Institute with their great work. I’ve been personally affected by mood disorders as well as had very dear friends and family suffer. Unfortunately, I’ve also lost family and close friends due to mood disorders. It’s an important issue – but we can make a difference and help those in need.

You can also join the trip!! Visit our information page to learn more:
